Icon Tutorial: Sweeney Todd

Learn how to turn this: into this: in 9 steps.

Tutorial made in Photoshop 7.0. I doubt its translatable-ness, since this tutorial contains Curves, Selective Coloring, and Channel Mixing.

- This tutorial does NOT involve layers, I have found them to be unnecessary. -

1. Select your image. Crop.


2. Open your curves option. (Image >> Adjustments >> Curves) Create a new point.
Input: 126
Output: 194


3. Select the Unsharp Mask filter (Filters >> Sharpen >> Unsharp Mask)
Amount: 36
Radius: 16.8
Threshold: 0


4. Open the Color Balance option. (Image >> Adjustments >> Color Balance) Make sure the Mildtones and the Preserve Luminosity options are checked.
Color Levels: +92, -13, -82.


5. Open the Selective Colors option. (Image >> Adjustments >> Selective Colors)
Reds:
Cyan: -41
Magenta: +21
Yellow: +11
Black: 0.
Yellows:
Cyan: -38
Magenta: 0
Yellow: +78
Black: 0
Whites:
Cyan: -100
Magenta:-10 0
Yellow: -100
Black: -100


6. Open the Channel Mixer (Image >> Adjustments >> Channel Mixer)
Red Output:
Red: +90
Green: 0
Blue: 0
Constant: - 8
Green Output:
Red: + 2
Green: 0
Blue: 0
Constant: -4


7. (This next step is optional.) Create a new Fill Layer (Layer >> New FIll Layer >> Solid Color)
Set the mode to Exclusion, and the opacity to %40. Fill it with #490000


8. Merge layers.

9. Open the selective colors again.
Blacks:
Cyan: 0
Magenta: 0
Yellow: 0
Black: +14


10. Add text, brushes and textures as desired.

Done! :)

Remeber These numbers are entirely image dependant! If you're running into problems, let me know.

And since this icon does not involve layers, there is NO .psd, so you can't be lazy ;)
